Term Insurance

Term Insurance – The Basics

Term insurance is a type of life insurance that provides coverage for a specified period (the term). At the end of the term, you have several options: you can cancel the policy if you no longer need the coverage, reduce the coverage amount if you still need some insurance, renew the policy at a higher premium if you can’t qualify for a new one due to health issues, or convert the term insurance into a permanent policy if allowed by the contract.

Understanding the Term

Terms can range from as short as 5 years to as long as age 75 or 85, depending on the insurance provider. If you decide that you no longer need the coverage, you can cancel the policy at any time, usually with a 30-day notice period to stop any further premium withdrawals.

Death Benefit

If the insured passes away while the term insurance policy is active, the beneficiaries receive a one-time, tax-free payment.

Premium Payments

Premiums for a term policy remain fixed for the duration of the term but often increase significantly if you choose to renew the policy after the term ends. Term insurance is typically the most affordable type of life insurance available in Canada.

Benefits of Term Insurance

  1. More affordable than permanent insurance, making it a popular choice for many Canadians.
  2. Ideal for covering specific financial obligations, like a mortgage or childcare expenses, in the event of a loss of income.
  3. Simple and straightforward to understand.
  4. Offers the highest coverage amount for the lowest premium.

Drawbacks of Term Insurance

  1. Premiums can increase substantially when the term ends.
  2. No cash value is accumulated; premiums paid are lost unless a claim is made.
  3. Health issues that arise during the term, such as cancer or a heart attack, may prevent you from qualifying for a new policy or reduce your renewal options, resulting in higher premiums.

Summary

Term insurance is an excellent choice for those who need coverage for a specific period or want to maximize their insurance coverage with minimal premium costs.
